KAAD-Alumnus presents his work at the Venice Biennale 2011

Together with three other distinguished artists from Zimbabwe, Misheck Masamvu represents his country at the 54th Biennale Arts Festival in Venice. The theme of their exhibition is “Seeing Ourselves: Questioning our Geographical Landscape and the Space we Occupy from Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow“. Until now Masamvu is the only artist from Zimbabwe who enjoyed a KAAD scholarship (2005-07). It is the first time that his home country is represented at this prestigious event and the team makes every effort to present an innovative, self-reflective, and critical show. With their exhibition near the Santa Maria della Pietà Church the country aims at making known to the international public its interesting arts scene, which was rather isolated for a long time. Organizers are also looking for an international dialogue about the role artists play in their respective societies.

Starting in 2006 he earned several prizes and organized exhibitions in Germany, France, South Africa, the Netherlands, Senegal, Italy and Great Britain. In Zimbabwe he also counts on the support of the German Embassy.

Masamvu´s art work stands out for an often surprising way of handling materials and for his creative form of combining them. The result is a very personal view of Zimbabwe’s social reality. The KAAD Secretary General visited the exhibition in Venice on July, 26th.
