Strengthening Social Responsibility of Universities: Department Head Visits Partners in Ecuador and Guatemala

In late February and early March the head of the Latin America Department, Dr. Thomas Krüggeler, visited partners and alumni in Ecuador and Guatemala.

In Ecuador Krüggeler not only met our partners of the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) and representatives of other universities, he also participated in a seminar entitled “Responsabilidad Social y Educación Superior”, which was organized by our alumni association AEBCA at the PUCE in Quito (February 23rd) and at the Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) in Riobamba (February 24th). The issue of the social responsibility of universities is currently hotly debated in Ecuador in the context of recent legislation that aims at improving the academic quality of universities and at integrating them in the process of pursuing economic and social development of the country. Krüggeler welcomed this debate, which in other countries still remains to be held. For KAAD social responsibility of universities goes without saying, but Krueggeler stressed at the same time the legitimate demand of universities for respecting their autonomy. At both events, which attracted around 70 students and professors, also participated Professor Emeritus Heinz Neuser (Bielefeld), member of the KAAD Academic Council

Since many years KAAD’s commitment in Ecuador is based on our close cooperation with our partner committee in Quito (secretary is Dr. Patricia Carrera, Directora General Académica de la PUCE) and the Catholic University. The alumni association AEBCA (Asociación ecuatoriana de ex-becarios católicos en Alemania) is one of the most active groups in Latin America. In 2011 KAAD sponsored twelve students and scientists from that Andean country.

In Guatemala the department head took part in a number of meetings of the KAAD alumni group that currently discusses possible forms and contents of a future alumni association in this Central American country. The association shall become connected to German cultural institutions in Guatemala and the local Church. This enthusiastic alumni group is also preparing steps to integrate into their association scholarship holders from their country who are still studying in Germany through the Alumniportal Deutschland and Facebook.

Discussing plans for the future: Alumni group in Guatemala

With the President of the Jesuit University Rafael Landivar (URL), Father Rolando Alvarado S. J., Krüggeler agreed on specific steps of setting up a master program in “Social Education” at URL by training educators and psychologists from Guatemala in Germany. This program shall serve as a tool to fight the problem of violence among the youth in that country and offer a quality study program particularly to collaborators of social institutions of the Church.

In Guatemala a partner committee was established at the Universidad Rafael Landivar only in 2006. This body responds professionally to the high demand for scholarships (fifteen interviews per selection process). The alumni group is already large enough to establish an association and to make plans for its future activities. In 2011 KAAD had ten scholarship holders from that Central American country.
